‘We maybe a small country but they have great ideas’

Bermudian fashion designers took centre stage last night at the City Fashion Festival’s Local Designer Showcase.

The Fairmont Hamilton Princess’ HarbourView ballroom was filled with spectators as dozens of models showed off the work of five Bermudian designers.

As part of the event each of the designers were assigned a mentor from the fashion world, including editors from Harpers Bazaar, Allure, Town & Country and Glamour Magazines.

Shiona Turini, who acted as the international liaison for the event, said the show is intended to highlight local talent.

“We are so focused on what’s going on overseas, some times we over look the talent here on the Island, Ms Turini a Bermudian who is based in New York, said.

“These are major editors and publishers who spent time to groom our local talent, and they deserve it because they are talented.

“We maybe a small country but they have great ideas.”

First to display her designs was 14-year-old Celine Morton, which matched bright pinks, blues and greens with black and white in a Coco Chanel inspired collection.

She was followed by the designs of Juliana Gibbons, who said she was inspired by a “heightened awareness” of her surroundings for her untitled collection.

Rajni Jaques of Glamour Magazine praised the work of her mentee, Ms Gibbons, saying: “It’s absolutely beautiful and artful, and it’s all Juliana.”

Alexandra Outerbridge meanwhile showed a collection of jewellery inspired by the youth of Los Angeles, where she currently lives.

Nicole Chapoteau, accessories director for Allure Magazine, described Ms Outerbridge as a great talent while Will Kahn, accessories editor for Town & Country Magazine hailed Rene Hill’s choices as elegant and sophisticated.

Ms Hill, who is perhaps best known locally for her scarfs, presented a full collection of ready-to-wear clothing called Velvet Sunset.

Closing the show was Alshante Foggo, who along with using bold colours and designs, made a mark by being the only designer to show swimwear and men’s clothing in her collection.

Christina Tung, publicist for Fisher Footwear, praised Alshante Foggo’s bold and unique designs.

“She’s intelligent, creative and talented,” Ms Tung said. “She makes dope clothes for dope girls and guys, and children.”
